A Trusted Science To Keep Your Smile Beautiful

When your initial treatment is finished, Dr. Funk will go over your options for retainers. We will then create a retainer custom made to fit your mouth and the new position of your teeth.

Retainers are typically made up of a thin layer of plastic, or acrylic connected with a thin metal wire. They should fit snugly on your teeth, but not be uncomfortably tight.

Nightly wear of the retainer will keep your teeth from moving back to their original position, protecting your smile and your hard work during orthodontic treatment.

Read down below to find out the different types of retainers that we offer at Emily Funk Orthodontics!

Retainers Made Specifically For You

During your consultation for a retainer, Dr. Funk will discuss your treatment plan, and discuss the options you have for choosing a retainer. At Emily Funk Orthodontics we offer three different types of retainer options. Each type works slightly differently and we’ll recommend the best kind for your unique situation.

  • Fixed Retainers

Fixed retainers, also known as permanent retainers, are retainers that stay in your mouth all the time with a special cement. When using a fixed retainer, you don’t need to worry about remembering to put it in, or taking it out when you’re eating. A fixed retainer is bonded to the back of your teeth, making it less noticeable, and more comfortable than traditional retainers. Since fixed retainers are not removable, they may need to be replaced every few years as you chew and function with them in.

  • Essix Retainers

Essix retainers are similar to Invisalign aligners. These retainers are clear and fit over both your top and bottom teeth. Similarly to Invisalign, these retainers are removable for when you are eating and drinking. They also provide a more esthetic option for maintaining your bite and alignment.

  • Hawley Retainers

Hawley retainers have been a standard in orthodontic practice for years. These retainers consist of a layer of thin plastic or acrylic connected with a thin metal wire. These retainers are able to slide comfortably over both your top or bottom teeth, keeping them in place, and keeping you comfortable throughout the entire treatment process. These retainers are the most versatile and can be adjusted with time.
